Can Cinnamon Help In Lowering Cholesterol?
Many people, when they think of cinnamon think only of the benefits in cooking. Cinnamon can be sweet or spicy, depending on which type of the plant you use. Well, the study of 60 people, divided into 3 separate groups took 3 different doses of capsules containing extract of cinnamon and the results were astonishing!
Group number one took about ¼ teaspoon every day (about 1 gram) for 40 days. Group number two took 3 grams daily, or just under 1 teaspoon. The final group was given about 1 ¾ teaspoons of cinnamon extract daily for 40 days. Once the 40 day trial had ended, the candidates ceased taking the cinnamon. Researchers found that the blood glucose levels in all three groups had reductions of 18%-29%. The triglyceride levels were measured at reductions of between 23%-30% with the group taking the higher daily dose of cinnamon extract recording the higher number.
There are some things to be watchful of when you are taking extract of cinnamon to lower your cholesterol level. If you consume a large amount, and you are diabetic, your blood sugar level may drop drastically. Also, be aware that just because certain foods contain cinnamon in it does not give you permission to head straight for the sweets and pastries! The sugar contained in those items will counteract the benefits of the cinnamon, so stick to taking your cinnamon in supplement form.
While the studies have found that taking daily doses of cinnamon extract does not increase your HDL (high density lipoproteins), which is “good” cholesterol. However, the studies did show a decrease in high cholesterol, which in turn created a better HDL reading. Cinnamon extract capsules can be found at most natural vitamin supplement stores. They are also available online. A random search on Google will point you in the right direction of where you can purchase extract of cinnamon. Although taking extract of cinnamon is not a guarantee that your cholesterol level will be lowered at all, it also will not hurt you in taking it, so there is no risk in simply trying the treatment and hoping for the best. Cinnamon lowering cholesterol is a positive step in the right direction to achieving the healthiest levels for your body.
